Unity: The benefits of prototyping
If you want to start a new project or test out a bunch of features you’d like to implement, it’s a good practice to do this with a prototype instead of a full-fletched project full with custom assets.
Why?
A prototype has various advantages for you and your team.
Think about the following:
You want to create a project and want to make money with it. However, you don’t have any assets and need to commission a (game) artist for creating these assets (or buy some assets). With this example, we already have two advantages of prototyping:
- You save money
- You save (a lot of) time
Sure, prototypes don’t look great. But a prototype is nothing more than a MVP (=Minimum Viable Product). A bare minimum showcase of the feature or mechanic you’d like to implement. Also, you have a very quick way to show, for example, a mechanic in your mind.
